This was just such a cute little shoot, so I decided we should have a translation of the interview. And by interview, I mean Inocchi acts like a pundit and gets shit for it and then they get down to actually talking.

After a long while, they're back in "Popolo!" Tonisen's "adult" guys time!1

"I've been doing un-idol-like things since back in the day (laughs)"

Starring in a musical together for the first time in 10 years, Tonisen are back in "Popolo" with "ON THE TOWN!" With talk of their musical and a pinch about recent events, these laid back adults (!?) let us in on their "Tonisen guys time"

They were able to do this play because they've been together for 20 years.

Sakamoto: "I'm really glad we're able to do this musical together after 10 years."

Inohara: "But you know, Sakamoto-kun, you've been doing musicals this whole time. I don't have much experience doing musicals, so I was a little worried..."

Sakamoto: "Wow, really? (laughs)"

Inohara: "But since I'm having to do this musical with the pros, it's reassuring to have you around, Sakamoto-kun. Is what I feel, but what about you, Nagano-san?"

Nagano: "Thanks for connecting this to me! (laughs)"

Sakamoto: "What the hell, man! (laughs)"

Nagano: "It's fun playing these three characters, so I think it's meaningful for the three of us to be doing this."

Inohara: "With that, what do you think, Sakamoto-san?"

Sakamoto: "I think this musical will be a success, since the mood we have with the three of us comes out in it. Because it's the three of us."

Inohara: "Right. Our strong point is that we've been together for over 20 years. These characters we're playing this time are also friends who've been together forever. There aren't many Broadways plays where you can do this kind of thing. So this is great, right, Nagano-san?"

Sakamoto: "What are you, a pundit?!"

Nagano: "It is great (laughs). There's no doubt about that. Though it might be better to replace my comments with what Inohara said (laughs)."

Nagano and Inohara consoling Sakamoto?!

Inohara: "Our roles in V6 and in Tonisen are a little different, but I feel like our roles in this play and in Tonisen are pretty close.

Sakamoto: "Right? Like how you guys support me when I'm struggling (laughs)."

Inohara: "Oh, right, right!"

Sakamoto: "When I read the script, i was like 'this is just like how Tonisen normally is!' (laughs)"

Nagano: "I feel that."

Inohara: "But now I feel like I want to support you even more (laughs)."

Nagano: "But we're at a place where it's good for us just to be around."

Sakamoto: "I'll probably be in the dressing room making food in the second act (laughs)."

Nagano: "Yeah, you really don't come out much in the second act, so are you gonna spend it prepping food? (laughs)"

Sakamoto: "It's been ten years since our last play together, so I wonder if our relationship has changed in that time?"

Inohara: "I don't think the basis of it has changed. But I think the way we think and the effort we put in has changed."

Sakamoto: "Such as?"

Inohara: "Ten years ago, there were still parts of us that were childlike, and without thinking about our kouhai we just kept going hard, and that was really hard on you, Leader."

Sakamoto: "Not really."

Inohara: "On that point, what do you think, Nagano-san? (laughs)"

Nagano: "I don't think any big things have changed, but we can take it a little easier, and our respective paces have changed, probably."

Sakamoto: "My interpretation is, as we've chosen our own paths to walk, we've gained confidence, and we've grown up."

Inohara: "Even when it comes to you two, because we have our radio show, I know a lot about you. When we run out of material, all that's left is to talk about yourself (laughs)."

Nagano: "I feel like our show has become a place where we exchange information."

Inohara: "We've been doing this for over 20 years, even though there was some awkwardness in the group, but we, against our will, talked it out and naturally reset."

Sakamoto: "Our personal lives are our outlet for things, so we understand each other (laughs)."

Why is Inohara raising earthworms?

Nagano: "But, that doesn't mean we understand everything about each other. It's rare that we get to be together, so I want to hear some stuff about you guys (laughs)."

Inohara: "Sakamoto-kun, you spend a lot of time on your computer, minutely tweaking details and things in a 3-D program, so what are you spending all that time concentrating on?"

Nagano: "Making all that stuff in 3-D, you're like a programmer."

Sakamoto: "I'm thinking of redoing my kitchen and bathroom, so I'm testing things out in a 3-D program."

Inohara: "You're always saying like, 'dude, let me renovate your house!' (laughs)"

Sakamoto: "Well, because there are courses on 3-D programs, I'm wondering if I should take one."

Nagano: "You're already an architectural designer. You could probably just build a whole new apartment."

Inohara: "Someday I want you to build a set for us for one of our shows."

Nagano: "Because we've run into one another at the gym, I was sort of wondering what the hell else it is you do, but I guess that answers that question (laughs)."

Inohara: "I wonder what it is you really enjoy, Nagano-kun. All three of us love eating delicious foods, but you've made your hobby into your job, so I'm really curious about that."

Nagano: "I'm going to places around Japan I've never been before, and rediscovering other good places. Other than eating, that's gotten to be a pretty soothing thing."

Inohara: "You should put together a photobook, since you're always snapping photos (laughs)."

Nagano: "But all my photos are of food."

Inohara: "OK, what if you took photos of delicious food with beautiful Japanese scenery in the background?"

Sakamoto: "How novel!"

Nagano: "Maybe (laughs)."

Sakamoto: "I know what your major hobbies are, Inohara, but you raise earthworms, and I always thought that spirit of inquiry that you have is a little weird, so I'm wondering where that comes from."

Nagano: "Didn't you have 50,000?"

Inohara: "It was 20,000. Sakamoto-kun, you had musicals, and Nagano-kun, you had food, so I was wondering what I should look into. When I realized the soil was really important in raising vegetables, I thought I should raise some Brandlings2."

Nagano: "Earthworms are really important!"

Sakamoto: "Wow, earthworm chat has gotten you guys really excited!"

Inohara: "Thanks to my earthworms, the soil in my vegetable garden has gotten to be really good."

Nagano: "But Inohara, when it comes to music and machinery, you're basically an expert. In V6, there's a lot of us who are really into our hobbies."

Inohara: "Because I've been doing a lot of non-idol-like things since back in the day (laughs). But there have been a lot of things that were good for me, so I don't think any of it was a waste of time."

Sakamoto: "Life is all about accumulating experiences, so we're able to do this play because we've built up this relationship."

Inohara: "Can we say I said that?"

Sakamoto: "Just like your character, you are so easily excitable! (laughs)"

. notes .
01. So this is actually "guy's meeting" but that just does not sound natural in English, so I'm glossing with this.
02. Obviously, a species of earthworm.
