It's been quite a slow day here at work, so have a quick translation of Ken's last column in TV Station.

I wanted to get a feeling for Iehira's time, so I went to where he lived. This will be an Iehira unique to me.

My play, "Homura Tatsu" begins on August 9th. I wanted to see what kind of place Kiyohara no Iehira lived in, and how he related to the place he lived in, so I went to Akita. And so while I was looking at these temples built around 900 years ago and these sacred trees, I felt like I was back in Iehira's time. There aren't many historical documents about the Northern Fujiwara, so there's not a lot of information about them. So that's why I went and got my own impressions and formed my own impressions about Iehira, so this will be an Iehira that's unique to me. Kuriyama Tamiya will be acting this time. I've heard a lot of "that's great you're acting with him" from other actors. Higashiyama (Noriyuki) told me, "oh, he's great!" So I'm really happy I get to work with him, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I went to the Danakil Desert in Ethiopia for "Global jungle survival limits! Live for 100 hours on Deserted island! In a White hot desert! In the Arctic!" that aired the yesterday. I had to get I don't know how many dozen immunizations, because getting sick would be a matter of life and death, I was rightly afraid to be doing this. There were complications, but I knew there aren't many chances to go to Ethiopia, so I thought I'd just go. I hardly ate or had enough water to drink for five full days, and of course I didn't really bathe, either. Not bathing for that long, I was well aware of how I smelled to other people (laughs). I felt like no matter how many baths I took, I just couldn't wash the smell off of me. For me, who loves to look nice, I'd like to think I did a really good job doing something like this, if I do say so myself (laughs).

So I bought a bathing suit before summer started, but I've been so busy, I haven't really gotten a chance to go to the beach, but that hadn't even occured to me until recently (laughs). They're swim trunks with "beach" written all over them. I think I'll probably melt into the ocean (laughs). One way or another, I'm gonna get to the beach.

. notes .
Just in general: Ken is playing a member of the Kiyohara clan, who were allied with the Fujiwara clan. Normally, I love to explain Japanese history but oh my sweet Jesus, Heian era politics are just so complicated, I'd need a week to get you up to speed. Definitely wasn't my focus in undergrad or grad. Wikipedia really might be your best bet for this. What Ken is talking about with the Northern Fujiwara is, as the name might suggest, the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan (who reigned but didn't technically rule in Kyoto (they were given regency by the Emperor. Seriously, it's so complicated, y'all)).
