18. matsumoto jun in "freecell" (part 2)

Did you all enjoy part 1? :D Here's part 2 with srsface!Jun, talking about "Wagaya no Rekishi," Arashi's concerts, and still making puns on his name.

Sorry this is a couple days late D; I got knocked out by a migraine and a severe case of dyslexia. But! extra special thanks again to my super awesome best Japanese professor ~ ♥

And while I have your attention: does anyone know if Jun's interview in "Cut" from 2007 got translated yet? Or where one might find said interview without having to spend $50 for it on eBay? Cos as much as I love Jun, I also love the prospect of going back to California with my friends after graduation and I"m sorry, Jun, but in the interest of fairness, Disneyland was here first... Ok anyway, if you know, holla back at me ♥

Everyone is excited for whatever will be coming next, aren't they?

"An anniversary is an anniversary, so people are thinking about that and that's why it became that kind of atmosphere. While we're also thinking about what will happen from now on like everyone else, we definitely have to think on those core things that make Arashi Arashi. So in order for us to be ourselves, we have to spice it up and do things no one else is; something that only Arashi can do, because we don't want to be anyone else."

Playing Vito in "Smile" was a challenge, wasn't it? What did you think about that role?

"That's right. For right now, I want to thank the staff since they let me challenge myself with 'Smile'. I was glad to overcome that challenge. It really feels like I'm living now. So with that in mind, I hope I can use this experience to keep on planting seeds."

Do you have any special plans right now?

"I just started filming for a drama. It's a special drama starring Shibasaki Kou commemorating Fuji TV's 50th anniversary. Mitani Kouki is writing the story. The title is 'Wagaya no Rekishi,' and it's set in the Showa era from the end of the war1 until the Tokyo Olympics in Showa 392.

And what about your role?

"It was really hard, but there's one family. Nishida Toshiyuki plays the father and Fuji Sumiko plays the mother, Shibasaki Kou is the eldest daughter, I'm the eldest son, Sato Ryuuta-kun is the second son, Horita Maki-chan and Eikura Nana-chan make up the five siblings, and Shibasaki-san will be something of a kept woman3. When I was first told about it, it sounded like a really hard to understand/heartbreaking story (laughs)."

Yeah, that makes sense (laughs), being a Mitani Kouki "home drama."4

"But, since the story is a period piece about a Showa era family, when something happens in the family, everybody else knows about it. Misora Hibari and Prime Minister both appear, so it'll show some of the background of the Showa era."

So you'll be acting out his life?

"That's right, from 17 to 35."

You haven't had a role like this before, isn't that right?

"I really enjoyed it a lot. I've never really been told about roles like this before, so I haven't gotten the chance to do ones like this and the ones that I do get to do are completely different. But it's not like I'm going and and clawing for roles like this. I haven't been in the position to do roles like this. So whatever I think I can do, if I genuinely think I can, then I will."

Like today's photoshoot in the Edogawa residence and other Showa buildings.

"It definitely has been all Showa era lately (laughs)"

So, last question for today: now that you've sold a million records, from now on there isn't a whole lot left that's Arashi-like to challenge, I don't think, but my question to you is: do you think you're very creative?

"Mmhm, but just a little, since it's rather trifling, don't you think?"

Since Shun-kun and others have already directed [films and such], so are you planning to do it at all? Whether it be directing a tv show or writing music or poetry; anything like that.

"Well, when you talk about things to do, there isn't really anything else I feel like I'm doing because, for now, I'm doing concerts. If my job is to do dramas or plays, then I want to be on that side, so if I"m asked to play a role, I'll be an actor. That's why when you talk about directing, things I do, that kind of thing -- I'm satisfied with my life with Arashi"

Arashi's concerts are certainly movie-like on their own, aren't they?

"Because we're not the type to do a lot of things all at once, we can only do it little by little. But because we're always looking for new things to do, of course we're really thankful for these ten years because they were a really great ten years. Tomorrow and the day after, in our 11th and 12th years, we want to keep going. So while I'm thirsty, I have to go on living. If I'm ever completely soaked5, I feel like it would all be over."

Ooh, that's a good word!

"We realize that the moment we're fully satisfied5, and so I don't want to become that. Well, if that happens, it happens, but then I wonder if it might be good to quit."

Did you decide that yourself?

"It's not really something I can decide on my own. If I'm going to do something, I have to do it right. Doing things halfway is worthless. So since I don't want to do things halfway, the most important thing, I think, is to do everything conscientiously; step-by-step."

So the end of the year is Arashi's tour and the lead in Mitani's production?

"That's right, at least for now. 'Wagaya no Rekishi' is full of nothing but really good actors, and so I'm already looking forward to it."

Does it feel like you're entering a new 'ring'?4

"Not yet, no. I still have a little ways to go before I'm 30 and I want those new things to be significant. Even though 30 is still a ways off, I see people doing these new things, thinking 'wow, how cool!' and so I always want to keep going like that."

* 1. world war ii, kids, duh.
* 2. showa 39 = 1964. jun is referring to time through the imperial era names in which time is divided up based on the current emperor. it's usually only used for important documents and stuff, not really in everday conversation. the showa era, during which emperor hirohito ruled, followed the taisho era and lasted from 1912 to 1989. the current era is heisei and 2010 is heisei 22. there, you just learned something today. you're welcome ♥
* 3. literally it was like "woman kept inside," and so it's not necessarily like a concubine but kind of like the second woman. i don't really get it; all i can think of is it's probably like the waiting years by enchi fumiko or something. good book, by the way 'masks' was better
* 4. all in katakana, so it gets quotations :)
* 5. here's that play on his name again ♥ oh jun, you're so cute. translated as 'satisfied' the second time just to give it a little more existential oomph ;)

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I'm glad (no, ecstatic) to know Jun thinks of his experience in Smile so highly, cos that is the proudest I've ever been of him in a role LOL... Domyouji, Momo and Shin hold a very special place in my heart, but I am proudest of him as an actor when he's Vito and not just because I'm Filipino. And of course, his work ethic and wordplay are awesome. I'll stop here cos you know I can write reams on my adoration of him haha.

If you can't find full scans or the translation of Cut, I can scan my pages for you. I can also send the pictures your way if you don't end up finding them. (BTW, most of the scans I saw back in the day scanned only the pics.) :)

Very Jun-like. With this interview, somehow his mind and who he wants to be or who he really is now, are conveying through his words into us, the readers. Its good Jun-kun. And so much more kind to hear that your life are in with Arashi (well at least for this moment).

Thanks again for translating and sharing ^^

Talking about drama ne ^^ In a drama, 'Smile' I really have to say that Jun did a really good work on that drama. I was just thinking that he's too good. I just think that Jun can play any roleand in any kind of dramas ^^ and then after'Smile' he has another new drama SP. At first I didn't expect to see Jun in this kind of drama in Showa period, but again he did a good job :D It's kind of like a new challenge for Jun ne :)

Talking about Arashi... Arashi is just keep growing and growing ne ^^ I always enjoy watching Arashi because they always make me smile :) And Arashi concert is always an event that everyone looking forward to see every year ^^ A fun concert from Arashi that you will never forget, ne ^^
