45. translation: matsumoto jun in "orista"

Ok, now that it's not Nino Day anymore, I can go back to being a Jun stan. So here's his part from that issue of Orista. I had most of this done a few weeks ago, actually, but my lazy ass didn't finish it till this morning.

If you missed Nino's, it's here (up next is Sho's or Leader's)

As members of the same group, that comfortable air comes naturally

With memories of doing solo work for the last half of the year fresh in his mind, he filmed the currently on-air drama "Wagaya no Rekishi" (Fuji TV), but what are his impressions of his role as the eldest son, Yoshio?

I played Yoshio from ages 17 to 35, so it was definitely a new experience, since that was the longest period of time in someone's life that I've portrayed. Since it's a story that really follows the history of the Showa era1, there were a lot of things I didn't know, so I learned something. I was influenced by a lot of things I learned for the first time in this drama, like the origins of the Touya maru shipwreck2. Over the long months and years, I portrayed one person's life; historically speaking I learned a number of really interesting things; and we really passed the time wrapped up in this kind of familial atmosphere as the Yame family, so it was a really interesting and valuable personal experience. Since, while we were filming, there was so much we laughed really hard about (laughs). Working with Nishida (Toshiyuki)-san and (Sato) Koichi-san, well, it felt like I was watching the film, "The Magic Hour,"3 (released in 2008) right before my very eyes. As I'm a fan of "The Magic Hour," I just couldn't help it (laughs). Of course, that doesn't mean it was all just a laugh riot; there were also points that really grabbed me. While it's airing 3 nights in a row, it's really only about 2 1/2 hours.

You've also dressed up as "Mr. Eyelashes" in the Fashio mascara commercial. It was pretty novel; you really got into it, huh?

The first time I heard about it, I couldn't even imagine it! I was like, "Wait, what? I'm doing what now? Applying mascara?" but when I saw how the commercial was gonna go, I was like "oh, that's how it is." I totally changed my mind about it and it was really interesting.

Your hairstyle was cute, too.

I had filming for "Wagaya no Rekishi" before that one, so since my bangs weren't very long, I ended up having that hairstyle.

You did another commercial with Aiba-san and Ohno-san for Kirin's "Green Label." How did that go?

With that, right? Filming went so fast I was kinda shocked. The first one, the "GREEN HEART" one we did in like, 3 takes.

Because you even breathe in sync (laughs).

When the five of us do something together, we're still a little off. But that is the image people have of us together. When it's like, the five of us running together, we're off a bit and it's kind of embarassing, but when just the three of us were running, we did it like normal (laughs). As members of the same group, we've always got this warm kind of atmosphere between us that just comes naturally.

So, we've got more questions from the readers! First, "You went to see some musicals in New York, what was your motivation for going?" (Girl, age 14, Kagoshima)

Well, I basically spent half the year doing a drama -- and the same goes for last year -- so this year I wanted to spend some time relaxing as much as I could. That's why I chose New York, but when I found the time to go, it ended up being kind of a whirlwind trip. And well, I'd always wanted to go.

What do you mean by "relaxing?"

So like, New York, right? It's my favourite type of city. People in Tokyo and NY do things pretty similarly. It might be that Tokyo people are a bit more distant, but I like that about New York. So when people ask me "what did you like best?" that's what I say. It's at the cutting edge of show biz, and that's definitely a reason I decided to go, so I really love that city.

"What are some interesting and fun points about dramas?" (Girl, age 26, Mie)

Oh, I have no freaking clue (laughs). I haven't done enough to really say.

What about this last one?4

Well, with regard to making the same show, then it's acting, but when you're talking about the camera not being on me, I could gain more confidence watching other people acting out their roles. So yeah, I think that was it.

"I've heard you're an early riser for being a young person, Jun-kun, and I am, too, but is there anything you know of that I can do to feel better when I wake up?" (Girl, age 24, Kyushu)

That is quite the problem (laughs). I'm young, too, so I wanna know, too (laughs).

. notes .
1. Remember, kids, the era during which Hirohito ruled, followed by the current era of Heisei and preceeded by Taisho and Meiji.
2. This was a train ferry that sank during a typhoon in the Tsugaru straight between Honshu and Hokkaido on Sep 26, 1952. I didn't know about this, either. We both learned something, Jun!
3. Written and directed by Mitani Kouki. Oh, Jun, you're so cute when you nerd out about movies ♥ Too bad it's not on Netflix, though :(
4. "Wagaya no Rekishi," not "Natsuniji," just bee tee dubs.
